Happy Scalp = Happy Hair Days - here’s how to have both

Looking for thicker, more lustrous locks? Then be sure not to skip scalp care! Despite the scalp care market booming in recent years, many of us still neglect to spare our scalps a moment of thought. Tucked away under our hair, the scalp can go unnoticed unless there is a specific issue such as dandruff or dermatitis – but even the most trouble-free scalps could do with a consistent routine.

Giving your scalp a little love and attention can have a big payoff – think boosted hair growth, more resilient strands and mirror like shine. So, where do we start?

1. Cleanse regularly but gently

Keeping your scalp clean prevents follicle blocking buildup.

Use a sulfate-free shampoo 2–3 times a week or as needed.

Massage in with your fingertips to help boost circulation.

Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm—not hot—water to avoid drying out the scalp.

2. Exfoliate weekly

It is important to remove accumulated dead skin cells, excess oil and product residue.

Ideally use a trichological scalp treatment cream or a gentle desquamating scalp mask.

Alternatively, a chemical exfoliant (like salicylic acid) could be used once a week.

Massage into the scalp with gentle circular motions, avoiding too much pressure.

Follow with a soothing conditioner to calm the skin.

3. Nourish with the right ingredients

A hydrated scalp is a healthy scalp.

Select lightweight oils like jojoba, argan, or tea tree oil for hydration and antimicrobial benefits.

Apply after washing or as an overnight treatment.

Avoid heavy oils that may clog follicles.

4. Stimulate circulation

This encourages nutrient delivery to the roots.

Do daily 5-minute scalp massages using your fingertips or a scalp massager tool.

Try caffeine-infused or peppermint-based serums to boost microcirculation.

5. Support from the inside

Nutrition plays a vital role in hair length, growth rate and density.

Eat a balanced diet rich in protein, iron, zinc, biotin, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

Consider a hair growth supplement if needed – but always check with your GP first.

6. Avoid scalp irritants

Protect the scalp from stressors that can cause inflammation.

Limit heat styling and chemical treatments.

Sun exposure is known to cause hair brittleness, dryness, loss of colour and decreased shine, but did you know your scalp can burn too? Protect your scalp from sun damage with SPF and hats when outdoors.

As today’s problem-solving consumers continue to proactively search for the root of their hair problems, hair experts are predicting a rise in scalp spa treatments, personalisation and a focus on the microbiome over the next year – watch this space!
